Understanding pip value

A pip is the smallest standard price move in a pair. For most forex pairs that is 0.0001; for JPY pairs it is 0.01. Pip value tells you what one of those moves is worth at your size.

  • EUR/USD, 1 lot: 1 pip is about $10.
  • USD/JPY, 1 lot: 1 pip is about $9.26, because JPY pips are 0.01.
  • Crypto: value depends on the current price and your unit size.

Why it matters

Knowing pip value lets you set a stop in money, not just in price. A 50-pip stop on 1 lot of EUR/USD is roughly a $500 loss. Pair this with the Stop Loss Calculator to size the trade correctly.
